Session Tips

Step 1. Schedule your session

Step 2. Pick your outfits. Keep your clothing ensembles simple and consistent. Coordinate your family’s outfits from head to toe since your photographer may do full length poses. Once you arrive to your session, your photographer will recommend a background that will compliment your look.

Step 3. Personalize with props. Feel free to bring your own items from home. For example, a baby blanket, stuffed animal, or special toy adds a personal touch to your photos.

Maternity Photography Tips

Planning your Session

  • Pick the right time. Schedule your session when you are in your seventh or eighth month of pregnancy. Your belly will have a lovely, full shape.

  • Remember, when you schedule between weeks 31 and 36 also gives you plenty of time to order additional maternity photos.

  • Bring your ultrasound with you. We can take a very special photo of mama and baby.

  • Your maternity session could include the father and older children to reflect your beautiful growing family.

  • Showing a bare tummy can be tricky. If you wish to show your bare tummy, wear loose-fitting clothing to avoid elastic/clothing marks.

  • Avoid any glare. Apply lotion at least an hour before your session to avoid the shiny belly-look and staining your clothes.

  • If you are showing bare skin, try to moisturize your knees and elbows.

  • Hands are in important, too! Get a manicure or a light polish for a more finished look in a close up of your hands around your belly.

  • Remove tight-fitting clothing and accessories, like watches and bracelets, at least two hours before your session.

  • You may want to include a few baby things like a cute pair of shoes or a cherished family heirloom in your photo.

Style Suggestions

You and your beautiful growing belly are the stars of your maternity photos. Here are a few additional suggestions to make this special moment in your life memorable.

  • Solid colored shirts focus the attention on your tummy’s shape and glowing expression.

  • Avoid big floral prints, swirls, plaids and stripes. Large patterns distract.

  • Black clothing gives you a slim silhouette.

  • Form-fitting clothes with a little stretch will compliment your figure rather than loose clothing.

  • Long sleeves tend to be the most flattering, but sleeveless and spaghetti straps work well. Avoid t-shirt length sleeves.

  • If you want to show your bare belly, consider wearing a top and skirt or pants that won’t leave binding marks across your tummy.

  • Silk and cotton fabrics drape beautifully around a pregnant body.

  • Empire-waist blouses and dresses, button-up shirts, tank tops, long drawstring skirts and tie dresses can really enhance your blossoming shape.

  • Dark jeans and black tapering yoga pants make your legs look long and slim.

  • Don't forget the feet. Pick your footwear depending on your clothing. If your toes are exposed in a sandal-style, you might want to get a pedicure.

  • If you choose tighter clothing, consider your undergarments with the style of clothing you choose to wear. You might not want lines showing through your clothing.

  • When choosing ways to show your style, consider a cheerful scarf, or sweater - even chunky jewelry can add fun splashes of color.

Newborn Photography Tips

How to Plan Ahead

  • Schedule your session early. Plan your newborn photos when your baby is between one and six weeks.

  • Think about your infant's schedule and attempt to schedule your photography session around your infant’s nap and feeding routine. If possible, feed your infant prior to leaving home. This will allow their little tummies to settle and reduce spitting up and fussiness.

  • A fussy infant can be challenging at any time. It is important to bring essential items to comfort your infant including a favorite blanket, pacifier, diapers, wipes and anything necessary for feedings.

  • Don't forget the parents! No infant photo is complete without you, the parents. Come prepared to join in the session.

  • A precious tiny hand in yours can be a long-lasting memory. Even if you aren’t comfortable posing, give yourself a manicure in case you want close-ups of your hands cradling the baby’s head, feet and hands.

  • Your baby’s milestone photos are important. Schedule them ahead of time while you are at the studio. Most common dates are three-month, six-month, nine-month and first birthday photos.

  • We can create your baby announcements, be sure to have your baby's weight, length and any other details handy.

Style Tips

Who doesn’t adore a photo of a cute baby? Capturing your infant with that precious new outfit and a few favorite items will help capture this time.

  • Simple is good. Infants look adorable with little or no clothing. Consider items such as a baby onesie, a diaper, or a swaddle blanket is usually sufficient.

  • Top it off right. Bring along a beanie or stocking cap as it can soften your baby’s face.

  • Newborn clothes tend to bunch up and look messy. Don't let your tiny baby get lost in layers of clothing.

  • Try to choose light-colored clothing. White and pastels bring out your baby’s sweet complexion.

  • For your session, avoid mittens or socks on your infant's hands and feet. They leave elastic marks on tiny wrists and ankles.

  • Attach the diaper a little loosely to avoid lines around your baby’s waist.

  • Always plan ahead and include a spare outfit in your diaper bag in case of spit ups or leaks.

  • If you have any cherished items like a favorite toy or family blanket be sure to bring it with you.
